Study 01 · Hydration
Drinking more water measurably improves skin

In 49 healthy women, adding water to the daily diet produced measurable improvements in both superficial and deep skin hydration — plus changes in skin biomechanics linked to a more resilient complexion.

Researchers at the University of Lisbon divided 49 healthy women (average age 24.5) into two groups based on baseline water intake and asked one group to add ~2 L of additional water per day for 30 days. Skin was measured at day 0, day 15, and day 30 across the face, upper limb, and leg using instruments that quantify epidermal (surface) hydration, dermal (deep) hydration, and transepidermal water loss.
The women with lower baseline intake showed the biggest gains — deep skin hydration improved significantly, and biomechanical properties associated with skin resilience shifted in a favorable direction. The authors concluded that dietary water is an active input into skin physiology, not just a background variable.

Study 02 · Skin Barrier
Water intake and skin barrier function in women

A recent clinical trial in healthy women confirmed what dermatologists have long observed: adequate daily water intake supports the skin's barrier function — the outer layer that locks in moisture and keeps irritants out.

The study set out to quantify how much daily water intake and topical moisturizer independently contribute to skin barrier performance in healthy adult women. Researchers measured transepidermal water loss (TEWL) — the gold-standard indicator of barrier integrity — alongside stratum corneum hydration.
Higher daily water intake was associated with improved barrier function, and the effect stacked with topical moisturizer rather than replacing it. In practical terms: what you drink and what you put on your skin work together, and shortchanging the "drink" side undermines everything you're doing topically.

Creatine, cellular energy, and skin cell defense

Skin cells depend on the same cellular energy system (creatine kinase) that fuels muscle. This foundational study showed that creatine helps skin cells maintain mitochondrial function and defend against oxidative and UV stress.

Published in the flagship dermatology research journal, this study established the creatine kinase system as a core part of skin's cellular energy machinery. Working with human keratinocytes (the primary cells of the epidermis), the researchers demonstrated three things:
- Stress reduces mitochondrial creatine kinase activity in skin cells, mirroring the energy decline seen in aging skin.
- Skin cells actively take up exogenous creatine, which raises creatine kinase activity and restores mitochondrial function.
- Creatine-supplemented cells were significantly better protected against free-radical (oxidative) stress.
This is a mechanistic study of creatine in skin cells and topical application, not a clinical trial of an oral supplement's effect on skin appearance. We share it because it explains why creatine is relevant to skin biology at all — and why creatine's role goes far beyond muscle.

Study 05 · Fibroblast Protection
Creatine protects skin fibroblasts from stress-induced aging

Fibroblasts are the cells that produce collagen and keep skin firm. This peer-reviewed cellular study showed that creatine helps protect these cells from the oxidative stress that drives skin aging at a cellular level.

Dermal fibroblasts are the workhorses of the dermis — they build and maintain the collagen and elastin scaffolding that gives skin its structure. As they age, they enter a state called senescence: they stop dividing, produce less collagen, and start releasing inflammatory signals that accelerate the aging of surrounding tissue.
In this study, researchers exposed human dermal fibroblasts to hydrogen peroxide (a controlled oxidative stress) and tested whether pre-treatment with creatine or nicotinamide could prevent senescence. Both compounds significantly reduced the senescence response, and both suppressed reactive oxygen species — the underlying trigger.
This is another mechanistic study in cultured cells, not a clinical trial. But it adds to a coherent picture: creatine supports the cellular energy and antioxidant defenses that skin cells need to stay functional under stress.

Study 07 · Hair Health FAQ
Does creatine cause hair loss? A direct answer, finally.
Antonio J, et al. Does creatine cause hair loss? A 12-week randomized controlled trial. Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2025.
The rumor that creatine causes hair loss traces back to a single 2009 rugby study that measured a hormone marker — not hair. This 2025 trial is the first to measure hair follicles directly. The result: creatine did not affect hair density, follicle count, or hair-related hormones.

The "creatine causes hair loss" claim has circulated for over a decade based on one small 2009 study that found a modest increase in DHT — a hormone loosely associated with male-pattern baldness in genetically susceptible people — but never actually measured any hair outcomes. No follow-up study had directly assessed hair follicles until now.
This 12-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial supplemented participants with 5 g/day of creatine monohydrate — the same dose in ELUXX CURRENT — and measured:
- Testosterone, free testosterone, and DHT levels
- Hair follicle density
- Follicular parameters including thickness and health
Result: no significant group-by-time differences for any hormone or hair outcome. Creatine did not raise DHT, did not thin hair, and did not affect follicle health.
